EOSINOPHILS: A Key Contributor to Inflammatory Damage

The purpose and function of eosinophils in disease are complex. This has become increasingly true as a myriad of potential immunoregulatory behaviors of eosinophils have been uncovered in recent years. One key element of their contribution to disease activity of eosinophils is their proinflammatory activity.²

Eosinophils have a role in the immune response where they are recruited and activated, leading to infiltration of target tissues throughout the body.² When physiological mechanisms are dysregulated in disease, eosinophilic inflammation in tissues can contribute to disease pathology and the self-perpetuating cycle of chronic inflammation and tissue damage.²

Activated and recruited eosinophils are a key cause of damage via production of inflammatory cytokines, toxic proteins, and interaction with other cell types.⁴

Most patients with eosinophil-driven diseases have elevated eosinophil counts in their blood and/or affected tissue³
